Maths in METNS

We enjoy a variety of Maths Interventions in our school including station teaching, parallel/team teaching and Maths Recovery.

Maths Recovery is a one to one maths programme which focuses mainly on improving a child’s understanding of number. The programme involves no reading or writing for the child. Most of the work is done orally.

Station Teaching:

In station teaching, students are put into three or more groups and the classroom has multiple learning centres. As the students rotate through the stations, the teachers teach the same material in different ways to each group.

Team teaching:

Team teaching involves a group of instructors working purposefully, regularly, and cooperatively to help a group of students of any age learn. Teachers together set goals for a course, design a syllabus, prepare individual lesson plans, teach students, and evaluate the results.

We use Ballard and Westwood Timed Tables tests in our senior classes and addition/subtraction tests in first and second class . These are a fantastic way of encouraging the children to improve their tables skills and the children are eager to beat their own personal score.

We partake in Maths week every year and enjoy Maths Trails, Problems of the day, active lessons and fun games.

Maths Whizz:

Sophie’s 4th class engaged with Maths Whizz as a pilot scheme last year. This is an online Maths Tutor that the teacher uses alongside their lessons and has proven to be very engaging for the pupils. We are looking into expanding this for the senior classes in time.
